Referring to your letter of January 20, 809/1911-12, asking me to recommend a suitable candidate for the post of First Assistant at the Hong Kong Observatory, vacant by promotion of Mr C.W.Jeffries, I have the honour to submit for Mr Secretary Harcourt's consideration the name of Mr.B.D.Evans, a member of our staff who is desirous of offering himself as a candidate for the post.
Mr Evans is 25 years of age (date of birth 1887 January 2) and joined this observatory as a Supernumerary Computer in 1902 at the age of 15. In February 1909 he was given a place on the Staff as Established Computer, having been previously nominated for a limited competition in an examination held by the Civil Service Commissioners. In this examination he was the successful candidate.
Mr Evans is familiar with the general work of the Observatory, of which he has ten years experience; he is a

regular observer with the Transit Circle and other instruments and is a good photographer. He has also had experience in calculations of an astronomical nature in connection with the reduction of observations and has had to supervise the work of junior computers.
In the event of Mr Evans being selected for appointment, I will arrange that he shall obtain experience with such i instruments as he is not already familiar with, prior to his leaving this observatory.
